The Government’s response gives a broad indication of their position on the various issues raised in the consultation document and identifies areas where it consider that the Law Commission could usefully carry out further investigation or consideration before reaching a conclusion.

In brief, the following points, amongst others, were set out in the Government’s response which may give an slightly clearer indication of the form and shape of the final act since the DfT will be taking the new legislation forward.

– The Government agrees that London should be included within the scope of reform and that a single regulatory system should be established across the whole country.

– We do not consider that there is a case for requiring the licensing of wedding and funeral services.

– The Government does have a particular concern about the provision of taxi services at airports.

– The Government is clear that the defining characteristic of a taxi is that it takes immediate hirings whereas a PHV must be booked through an operator.
