Trade Bus Lane asks on the TLRN
No. Bus lane location Requested by Possible Commentary Usable from
1 London Bridge NB LTDA/LCDC YES
  • Part time operation possible
  • Time restricted excluding 16:00 – 21:00 exclusion due to impact on buses – will be monitored as part of a three month trial to see if full-time operation possible
  • In the PM Peak Bus journey times increase by 6 mins 30 secs – 7 mins.
  • 1,250 buses per direction per day with approx. 32,500 passengers per weekday per direction.
  • Equates to between £391,700 to £421,862 in passenger dis-benefits (based on value of time and delay).
  • Approx. 58% of all people travelling in vehicles across the bridge are on a bus.
  • £2.9m / annum cost in additional buses if PM peak was included in operation
  • Following completion of Tower Bridge Works
Post Tower Bridge works
2 Wandsworth Gyratory LTDA YES
  • Taxi access already allowed along Wandsworth High Street
  • TfL will need to progress a safety audit for the use of this Ram St contraflow bus lane.
  • Access also granted to new scheme bus lanes
4 weeks – subject to safety audit
3 Catford one way system LTDA YES
  • Taxi access can be granted to Catford Road WB and Rushey Green  – TRO and signage update in progress
4 weeks
4 Southwark Tooley Street WB LCDC YES
  • TfL will need to progress a safety audit for the use of this contraflow bus lane
4 weeks – subject to safety audit
5 Shorter Street – Tower Hill LTDA Will model
  • This is likely to cause significant bus and general traffic delay in this area
  • Detailed modelling would be needed to fully assess this; initial feasibility shows significant journey time impacts.
  • This would further increase vehicle journey times on the Upper/Lower Thames Street/Embankment route; this road is already performing below acceptable levels.

Trade Bus Lane asks on Borough Roads
No. Highway Authority Bus lane location Requested by Capable of being supported by TfL Commentary
6 WCC Piccadilly eb bus lane 24h LTDA YES
  • TfL will support access to this bus lane if the taxi trade approaches the borough
  • Parking and loading changes would need to be agreed with WCC
7 City of London Bank Junction LTDA YES
  • At TfL’s request a second option is being considered which would allow taxis.
  • We cannot commit further to this scheme until we have a full understanding of the assessment of each option
8 City of London Byward Street WB – entry into Great Tower Street LCDC YES
  • TfL will support access to this bus lane if the taxi trade approaches the COL. A decision by CoL would be needed on access to Great Tower Street before this could be implemented
9 Camden Tottenham Court Road LTDA Unlikely to be able to change Borough’s view
  • This has been challenged through a Judicial Review and refused
10 Camden Theobalds Road/New Oxford St – wb contraflow LTDA Will model
  • Requires modelling but significant bus impact expected
  • It would also be subject to a safety audit by Camden.
  • Theobalds Road/New Oxford St is a London Borough of Camden contraflow road carrying 27 buses per hour.
  • Outcome of modelling will be shared with the taxi trade once complete
11 WCC Shaftesbury Avenue into Piccadilly Circus – contraflow LTDA Will model
  • Requires modelling but significant bus impact expected
  • Shaftesbury Avenue’s 57m bus only contra flow lane is a Westminster City Council road, operating 24 hours.
  • Piccadilly Circus is a key location on the network where signal timings are finely balanced. Changes to the demand for this bus lane will potentially impact all other approaches which service numerous bus routes.
  • Outcome of modelling will be shared with the taxi trade once complete
Received last week
12 Camden Euston underpass LTDA Will model
  • Detailed modelling would be needed to fully assess this
  • Euston Road slip is a London Borough of Camden contra-flow road, which bypasses the Euston underpass and is presently bus and cycle only.

(Following the Tottenham Court Road two-way project, it will become a general traffic lane)

  • Outcome of modelling will be shared with the taxi trade once complete
13 WCC Strand – right hand filter over Waterloo Bridge (thus avoiding Aldwych ) LCDC Will model
  • Detailed modelling would be needed to fully assess this
  • Incorporating taxis would mean a need to increase the green time and take time away from the main movements, causing significant delay to other routes with taxis, buses and general traffic.
  • Outcome of modelling will be shared with the taxi trade once complete
